The Japanese Boulder Garden
The Japanese Boulder Garden was originally a square overgrown patch of lawn, with an unsightly sunken path running to the back gate. The idea was to create a peaceful, lush and calming space with a central seating area. Using lots of irregular lines, the aim was to create an informal feeling that is mimicked in nature. Randomly cut paving with gaps for ground cover plants to colonise, boulders of varying shapes and sizes as well as a set of three arches created the main features of the garden.
As the planting establishes, the borders will blend more seamlessly with the pebbles and boulders. In addition, once the Rowan trees, climbers and shrubs grow, the garden will begin to feel more enclosed and private.

We didn't want to leave the side return as a dead space, so decided to make a feature of it. Three simple arches with wire supports will eventually create the framework of a Star Jasmine walkthrough.

There are lots of wildlife friendly plant species and there are many new microhabitats for different species to colonise.
